Environmental Management System (EMS)
Antecedents and circumstances of introducing EMS
One of the most important goals of our environmental activity has been to run our Environmental Management System certified by the MSZ EN ISO 14001:2005 standard on a high level.
MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant began implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS) conforming to the MSZ EN 14001:1997 standard in 1999. The Environmental Management System of the nuclear power plant of Paks started to function when the current regulations took effect in March 2001.
The Environmental Management System of PNPP was first certified in November 2002. The power plant has had a certified Environmental Management System conforming to the requirements of the MSZ EN ISO 14001:1997 standard since 15 November, 2002.
The ISO 14001:2004 standard, which replaced the ISO 14001:1996 (MSZ EN ISO 14001:1997), was published in November 2004, and as a Hungarian standard, was issued in May 2005 under the number MSZ EN ISO 14001:2005. We were left with a very short time period for conversion.
Because of this short period, at the document-renewing audit in November 2005, it was already the new standard that our EMS had to conform with.
The power plant managed to carry out the necessary regulation changes. At the document-renewing audit in November 2005, the conversion to the new standard was successful.
The audits were carried out by the Hungarian Standards Institution, which did not encounter any deviation from the regulations of the standard.
In the review audits of 2006 and 2007, PNPP demonstrated the adequacy of the operation of its environmental management system and the continuous enhancement of its environmental performance; therefore, it rightly uses the document certifying its conformity with the MSZ EN ISO 14001:2005 standard.
Characteristics of EMS
One means of attaining our strategic goals is the operation of an integrated management system based on a process structure elaborated according to unified principles within the institution. This integrated management system includes environmental and quality management systems and the quality assurance systems of the accredited laboratories related to particular activities.
One of the basic characteristics of our EMS, which conforms to the MSZ EN ISO 14001:2005 standard, is the constant development of environmental protection. The development of environmental protection is ensured by setting environmental goals and carrying out the given programmes in order to achieve them.
The development of environmental activity is not necessarily put into practice at the same time in every field of our corporate activity. The group of environmental aims changes dynamically according to the demands. On the one hand, there are annual propositions as for new aims; on the other, these goals are achieved. We need to assess our goals and the programmes responsible for accomplishing them within the framework of a managerial review.
The conformity of our environmental policy and aims ensures the conscious development of our environmental activity and supports the attainment of our future goals.
We accomplish our environmental goals in conformity with the accepted programmes.
The environmental aims of Paks Nuclear Power Plant are the following.
